520 3    |a Does the Public Support Community-Based Primary Prevention Initiatives Against Child Sexual Abuse? by Kain Coffey. This study assesses public support of community-based primary prevention of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) such as a Dunkelfeld style program, while introducting The Global Prevention Project - MAP Wellness Group. The hypothesis is that the younger community will show more support for the program, while the older community will show less support. It is also hypothesized that higher scores (negative attitudes) in general will lower support, and vice versa. The survey was distributed through Qualtrics, where several scale-based questions were asked in relation to attitudes toward pedophiles. A Pearson’s Rho correlation was conducted with a predictor variable of age, and an outcome variable of approval rating of a Dunkelfeld style program. A linear regression was conducted, with Approval Rating as the predictor variable and overall scores as the outcome variable. Full results are pending, but show great promise, as there is an overwhelming support for this type of program.
520 3    |a Qualitative Thesis on Pathways and Barriers to Treatment Access for Non-Offending Minor Attracted Persons by Koushank Ahuja. Even though prevention should triumph over punishment, the criminal justice system anywhere in the world focuses on how to punish the guilty for the crimes that they commit, which is absolutely fair. The people who commit crimes should be held accountable, but what if we could prevent the crimes, what if we could just prevent the crime-impacted people from undergoing the trauma? This qualitative thesis focuses on the ideals of “prevention is better than cure”. In cases of Child Sexual Abuse, the children after being abused have already faced that trauma. In this study, we utilized a grounded theory approach to find out the pathways and barriers to Pedophilic Treatment Prevention, so that people with pedophilic interests, also known as Minor Attracted People (MAP), can get treatment before they commit a crime, thus protecting children from the abuse and the trauma related to it. We evaluated the demographics of minor attracted persons (MAPs) who joined our first MAP wellness group in New York State to answer the question.
520 3    |a Self Control in Persons with Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment with High Alcohol Dependence by Taylor Harrington, Samara Rice. Introduction: Several studies have reported that self-control is affected by alcohol use; however, the effects of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) on self-control over time after treatment remains in question. We aim to fill the gap in literature on AUD patients and their dependence on alcohol and how that may affect their self-control. Our hypotheses were a) persons with AUD that have high alcohol dependence have low self-control and b) women with AUD have high self-control. Method: We examined 109 participants with AUD and tested how self-control changed after treatment over a 15 months period. All participants met the criteria from the DSM-5 for AUD. The participants received Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for AUD as their treatment and were measured at three-month intervals post treatment. The participants were measured on gender, self-control (Barratt Impulsivity Scale), and alcohol dependence severity symptoms. Results: We expected, post treatment, that participant’s self-control would have increased along a 15-month period. A one-way within-subjects ANOVA was conducted to assess for the change in self-control. A two-way between-subjects ANOVA was conducted to investigate if gender or alcohol dependence were related to self-control. No significant results were found; therefore, our hypotheses were not supported. However, due to concerns about low statistical power for the ANOVA, two independent samples t-tests were then conducted. The analyses demonstrated that there were significant relationships for both of our hypotheses. Discussion: Although our findings initially found no significant results; after further analysis, we discovered that there is truly a relationship between patients with AUD, in which those that have high alcohol dependence have lower self-control as well as women with AUD have more self-control than men. Knowing how persons with AUD may be affected by self-control in regard to their alcohol dependence provides greater knowledge of how to approach treatment plans for these individuals. Future research should investigate these factors and also replicate the same experiment but with more participants.
520 3    |a Relationships Among Social Media Addiction and the Big Five Personality Inventory by Shay Elster and Develyne Petion. Internet addiction is a newly emerging topic of research due to the rapid increase of availability and the pandemic. When the pandemic began and quarantine was implemented, individuals were forced to stay inside leaving them with only online options for social interaction. This secondary analysis of data collected at SUNY Oswego investigates a specific form of internet addiction called social media addiction. The research project is a secondary analysis of the relationship specifically between degree of social media addiction and personality, operationalized by the Big Five Personality traits. Specific hypotheses include: 1) Higher levels of agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness will relate to higher symptoms of social media addiction, and 2) Higher levels of extraversion will relate to lower levels of symptoms of social media addiction. This study was conducted using archival data collected from an online survey investigating the relationship between forms of internet addiction and personality variables. Participants were college students participating in an online survey for extra credit. Planned analyses will investigate specific hypotheses about how those high in specific Big Five personality traits will be related to either an increase or decrease in symptoms of social media addiction. Findings will aid in the understanding of the nature of social media addiction symptoms as they relate to different Big Five Personality traits. Future research will examine social media addiction as it relates to both stable constructs such as personality and variable constructs such as mood.
520 3    |a Effective Management Styles for Low-Wage Generation Z Student Workers by Lucia Lombardi. This study examines the crossroad between a number of types of key employees. First, low-wage employees, which the public is starting to realize are far more necessary than people give them credit for. Second, student workers, who universities and colleges rely on for work in dining halls, recreation centers, and other on-campus positions and offices. Finally, the group in which many of these workers today fall: Generation Z. They are the newest generation in the workforce, and managers are struggling to manage and retain them, particularly in low-wage on-campus positions. There have been past studies done that examine aspects of these workers in various combinations, but none bring all three characteristics into consideration in the same study. The goal of this study is to find a management style within the Blake Mouton Managerial Grid that managers can look to to guide them in holding onto their low-wage Generation Z student workers
