520 3    |a Isaac B. Poucher was hired by Edward A. Sheldon in 1865 to head the school's one-person Mathematics Department. Poucher had completed the course of study at the Albany State Normal School and had both taught and served as principal in public schools in Oswego under Superintendent Sheldon.
520 3    |a In 1890 Poucher married Matilda Cooper, who had been perhaps the most capable instructor of Pestalozzian methods in Oswego. Cooper was on the faculty at the school from 1861 to 1886.
520 3    |a Having worked with Sheldon at the Normal School from the time it was taken into the state system in 1865, Poucher was the natural choice for principal when Sheldon died in 1897. During his administration Poucher continued to run the school in the Sheldon tradition. He understood the practical side of education and was instrumental in starting the formal Departments of Industrial Arts and Domestic Science. It was during his administration, too, that the twenty-seven-acre tract of land that included Shady Shore, the former Sheldon home, was acquired in 1908 as a site for a new school building. The construction of the Main Administration Building (now Sheldon Hall) was begun in 1911; it was completed and ready for occupancy in 1913.
