520 3    |a The Normal School Auditorium (Sheldon Hall), was wrecked by a devastating fire late on Saturday night, January 18, 1941.
520 3    |a Two pumpers and a ladder truck maneuvered through the icy streets to battle the blaze. Restricted to the auditorium the fire was extinguished in four hours. The cause was undetermined, although it was thought perhaps to have been faulty wiring. An organ, piano and works of art, including a marble bust of Dr. Sheldon by sculptor Herbert Adams, were destroyed along with the complete interior of the auditorium. Students and faculty formed a clean-up brigade to rid the building of charred debris, and state legislature voted emergency funds for repair.
